Competition Tips

I've decided to put together a little post including some tips on entering (and hopefully winning!) competitions. By no means am I an expert, but I have been entering competitions from a young age and still remember my first competition win. Does anyone remember the 'Freebies' page in Shout magazine where you would tick what you want and see if you win? My first win was a set of  'Party Girls' books - please tell me I'm not the only one who remembers these? a year or two later I won a Sequin Art set. I think that from then on I have always enjoyed entering competitions as there is always the 'What if?' and imagining yourself receiving an email telling you you've won a luxury holiday abroad - at the end of the day some one has to win it! My family members will say 'You're so lucky! and 'I never win anything!' - if this is you, then lets change this! As cheesy as it is - you've got to be in it to win it! Of course you're not winning anything if you aren't entering!

Entering competitions is usually classed as a hobby and I think you should be able to dedicate some time of your day or week to enter some of your favourite competitions. Lately, I have less time to enter competitions as I work full time and also want to find the time to get my blogging done too. I usually find it easiest to sit down with my laptop when I get a few hours to myself and go on a huge competition spree! Why you enter competitions is all up to you, but the main aim of course is to win! There are so many amazing prizes on offer, you'll find yourself spoilt for choice. It can also really save you money too. You may well find yourself getting excited when you see the postman, hoping he's bringing you some goodies!
Over the past few years, I have won a good few competitions. I can only hope you don't see this as bragging but it may give you a good idea of what you could win! I have won a years subscription to More! magazine (R.I.P!) and currently a years subscription to Heat magazine. I have also won a£100 cheque which definitely came in handy and recently won £500 worth of beauty products from The Organic Pharmacy. My favourite win to date has been £100 Boots vouchers - I had a lot of fun getting that spent and it didn't take me long to spend either!
The main thing to be aware of is that you're not very likely to win overnight. It sure is possible but its not very realistic. I can go for a long period of time without any wins at all, as many compers do and then all of a sudden, two or three can turn up in a week, restoring your faith in competitions! You need to be aware that winning can take time, as explained above. Keep a positive frame of mind and carry on regardless of not winning a thing. When there are 'bigger' giveaways such as Glamour's May Beauty Giveaway; you have a much higher chance of winning seeing as there are more prizes to give away. You never know when there may be a winning email waiting for you in an inbox!

Don't just enter for anything and everything. You'll soon find yourself feeling disappointed when you find out that you've won a novelty hat that you wouldn't be seen dead in. I no longer enter for things I do not want or could not use as it seems unfair to other people who generally may be longing to win it. Someone's perfect prize could be my nightmare, so why enter for it? I will enter for things that I know family or friends may use, such as books, beauty products, DVDs, games - some that may not be my type of thing but I know there is something close to me who will be more than happy to receive it.

A tip that you may find helpful is to have separate accounts for Facebook, Twitter and your email. I have a separate 'comping' email address than my personal email address. This is because once you enter a lot of competitions, the companies will most likely send you marketing emails and newsletters. This would soon clog up your personal email address and you could find yourself missing important emails. As for Facebook and Twitter competitions, I would suggest you have a separate account for these for entering competitions. A lot of Twitter competitions are 'RT to win' and you may well be getting on your friends nerves with endless competition tweets and re-tweets! Make sure you have a profile picture and follow companies so nobody thinks you're a robot! (Yes, really!) Also, be mindful of what information you are giving out over the internet. I have no problem giving my name, address and email so I can ensure to receive a prize, but I fail to understand why they need my home phone number and telephone number! Some companies will insist on you giving your phone number and I tend not to enter these. We all know how annoying those automated phone calls can be!

Now that I've talked about what I feel are the main tips for entering competitions, you may well now be asking yourself 'Well, where can I find competitions?'. I would suggest signing up to competition forums such as Loquax and Money Saving Expert - both forums of which I regularly join in and post whenever I find new competitions. You will need to create an account and be sure to be grateful and respectful to other member. Don't just take and take, if you find a brand new competition, share it with others! Karma comes back around and you'll also get a good feeling from sharing too.

I hope you find my tips helpful! Good luck x
