Are you a Secret Blogger?

For today's post I thought I would write something a little different from my latest posts. I have been thinking over the past few days that I wonder how many bloggers share their blog with family, friends or colleagues. I see other bloggers and I really do admire their success.

Blogging is of course nothing to be ashamed of by all means. We should be proud of our little space on the internet and we work hard on our posts. But for me, that's exactly what my blog is. It's my little space on the internet, which ironically considering that anyone can read it, I find it quite personal to me. I do share my blog with just my sister and mother as they were the ones who gave me the push to start blogging in the first place. I was wondering who on earth would want to read what I've got to say? I'm grateful to them for giving me the push as blogging has become a new hobby to me and I really enjoy spending time working on it. However, as much as I enjoy writing my blog I know that I wouldn't want to give out details of my blog to others that I know. I feel some people wouldn't understand it and may take the mickey out of it. This is where I would usually butt in and say 'Why should I care what others think of my blog?'. I can't quite explain why as I'm not too sure myself but the thought of people I know reading my blog makes me feel awkward. I just think that I need more time to reach that stage of my blog and there's nothing wrong with me keeping my blog to myself and my readers.

For me, I simply wouldn't have the confidence to put myself out there so openly, such as making YouTube videos and showing how their brand new dress looks on them - I know I don't feel comfortable to do that. Maybe I will one day, who knows?  I really admire and look up to other bloggers who put themselves out there a bit more as it shows they have got confidence and they believe in their blog. Then I also think that you can still enjoy and build up a following on your blog without doing this too. In a nutshell, what I'm trying to say is that there is no right or wrong. It's all down to you!

I'm interested to know whether you shout from the rooftops about your blog or do you keep it tucked away safely to yourself, safe in the knowledge that colleagues and friends are blissfully unaware. I know that I am the latter and I'm happy to keep it that way. How do you feel about sharing your blog?

I'd love to know your thoughts!

  1. Only my boyfriend knows about my blog because I live with him. I also hide mine and I'm so surprised at how many others do too.
I just can't be bothered for people I know to judge it or anything like that, it's mine and I enjoy it.
    Great post :)

  2. I had a blog a few years back that I kept from 90% of my friends and family. I had only told my best friend about it. In the end, everyone found out and I got some pretty bad backlash/comments about it, so I deleted it. This time around, I didn't really care at all what other people thought so I put it up on facebook whenever I posted. I've gotten some pretty great feedback from my friends who I thought who be a bit dubious about the whole thing! Even my guy friends think it's pretty cool and are impressed (granted, they don't read it because it's rather girly, but still!)

I'm really happy that I decided to be open about it though! I even have people recommending things to blog about every now and then which is cool!

  4. I share my blog with my boyfriend and mum. My posts go to my personal Facebook but I don't think many of my friends really pay attention to it as it's not really about anything they're interested in.
I actually started my blog as a sort of personal place, I'd just moved to London and wanted a new hobby. I then thought it would be perfect to meet bloggers and make friends around London, knowing no one was really difficult and I'm really proud of how far I've come and so happy with all the blogging friends I have made so far!

  5. I'm exactly the same, only my mum and boyfriend know about my blog, but I even have a seperate twitter account for my blog, partly because I don't really want to share it with people I know, and partly because on my blog's twitter account I can tweet away about girly things with like minded people! I know how you feel though - I shouldn't care about people judging me but I still do! xx

  6. I haven't told and of my friends or family because I'm the same I like having my own little space where I can talk about what I want without having to defend what I want to talk about, I might do one day but today isn't that one day :)

  7. I am definitely a secret blogger - some of my friends know about it but that's because they somehow found my specifically created Instagram account for my blog, and got to know what I was doing! I did feel a little embarrassed at first because I didn't want people to assume I'm vain, when I really just have a huge passion for hoarding cosmetics! The people who do know are really supportive, but I would love my blog to have been going for longer before I tell people about my little secret... ;)

  8. I was a very, very secret blogger up until recently. My Mum & Dad still don't have a clue, but my boyfriend knows and his parents...and all my friends. So it's not that secret any more! xx

  9. I spilled the beans to a few close friends and after being judged and said things to, it didn't really matter. I never replied to their poking fun at me at every chance they got and gradually they don't even talk about it. In my family only my mom knows. To say the truth, I like it this way.

  10. Up until recently I was a very secret blogger, although my boyfriend and one of my friends has always known!
Everyone I work with knows about my blog, too - but I don't think they know the URL xx

  11. Only my family, boyfriend and one of my friends know. I would like to tell other people but I am not sure how they would react as a lot of people don't realise how interested I am in make-up because I don't wear a huge amount on a daily basis. I luckily haven't really had anyone I know take the mick out of me as I only really tell people I totally trust.
This was a great insightful post!

  13. For the first year of when i started my blog, I kept it hush hush, but when my boyfriend seen me write a post - he lives with me in my mum's house, one night he asked what it was & I remember getting all flushed & had a fluttery feeling inside my chest too when I tried to explain to him, but now he thinks it's really good at what i'm doing, so i do it around him :) But when i had to tell my mum that i was going to Edinburgh for an event, I had to tell her where i was going incase she got suspicious - tbh wouldn't really want my mum to worry about me, so i told her, but she didn't understand at first - maybe i just described it to her wrongly, but she knows i have another hobby.
But when i told my best friend - i was kinda tipsy, i couldn't believe the reaction I got - it was a good 'un & she said she had to do one when she was doing journalism in college & said i should have told her, now she wants to start her own blog too :)
However, I have twitter only for my blog & when a girl from work followed me & obv seen the link in the box, she clicked on it & asked me the next day what it was, but i could tell from her body language that she was being 'off' with me & i could just tell she thought what i doing was strange, but i continue to keep on doing it as it's something I love doing & i love chatting to all the lovely girls over on twitter, blog comments & meeting them at events or meet-ups :)
I have had both a positive & negative reaction to my blog & i've even included it on my CV - I want to make sure my CV stands out personally for the employer to go "Oh she has something interesting linked on her CV & it also shows that I am committed to my little hobby on the side :)

I apoligise for the long comment, I hope this has given you some thought over whether to tell the world about your blog or keep to people you know & trust :)

  14. this is such an interesting topic and i enjoyed this post :) I kept it secret for a month or so before I showed my parents and my best friend. I then shared it with my boyfriend and his mum, and this gradually got to the stage where my entire work place knew about it. Now im at uni and I actually showed it to my tutors. They're so intrigued by it and I always get people coming up to me and asking me about it. I must admit, I sometimes wonder about certain people and how they will react but Ive kind of got used to just telling people now. I can totally see why you wouldnt though - i was a little unsure about it and was worried certain friends would take the mickey. I've recently started posting about it on facebook and have had old school friends ask about starting one! I also link it on my CV! Employers love that kind of stuff!

There's nothing wrong with keeping it to yourself at all. I think people do like to find out more though - everyone ive told so far has loved it and now i have all of my friends who read my blog every time i post. I've even had people I never spoke to at school say 'i read your blog'. It makes my day!

    xx

  15. I only recently realized just how many people keep their blogs a secret! It just never occurred to me to do so, but I totally get it! Letting others know you blog does leave you quite vulnerable.

I personally just don't care. I blog for me, like I always have, and share it on facebook with my friends and family - but not "too" much, just in case it comes off as "spammy"!

I honestly think most of my friends probably think blogging is silly. I don't have one friend that is a full time blogger like myself and I just think they don't get it. Out of 400 followers, I know less than a dozen of them. I am so grateful for those who do follow, but it doesn't hurt my feelings that most of them don't.

So regardless if you share your blog or not, it's not important. What's important is that you're doing something you love and that you are able to have a creative outlet!

I love the blogging community and all the amazing bloggers I've "met" throughout my journey. It is such an encouraging environment to be involved with those who truly "get" why you blog ;)

    xx -b.

  16. I am definitely a secret blogger, only my 2 closest friends know I have a blog as they were the ones who encouraged me to start it but my family have no idea. I think it is really hard to explain why we blog to people who don't do it themselves so it is just easier not to tell people but I don't think you should ever be ashamed or embarrassed by your blog. Very interesting post :-)

  17. i thought it was only me aha i am definitely a secret blogger! some of my family know but most just took the piss so i've given up on telling anyone as the main reaction i get is that i just like to talk about beauty/myself, whats the point in doing that? and im self-centered which is farrrr from the truth! its so nice to read other people feel the same but like me don't let it stop them! And again with the CV thing i think its a great thing to have - it shows your computer literate, can write, have communication skills so i've now just thought well it's another thing i'm doing to get a head of the game that i enjoy so screw 'em!

  18. I used to write so many diary type blogs that I kept secret but with Laura's Haven, I wanted somewhere that I could be proud of sharing. Some of my friends have taken the piss a bit but I've got to try out products, meet people and even got a job interview off the back of it so they usually stop after I tell them that! It leaves you vulnerable letting people see your personal space and writing but the people who think it's stupid usually forget while sometimes a friend will say 'oh I really liked this post that you did' and that is a really lovely feeling :) if I was still in school though, I definitely would have kept it a secret ;') xx

  19. I am a pretty secret blogger. Some people know that I blog, but very few have actually seen what I do. I am happy with my blog, just very insecure about sharing it and facing judgement from people who don't have my best interest at heart.

  20. I haven't told anybody about my blog who knows me personally as I think the same things that you do about people judging me for it. The school I used to go to were very judgemental when it came to accepting people that tried to do something a little different so I have kind of kept my blog to myself. Nobody in my family know about it either, however I think I am going to try in the new year to tell a couple of people and to try to be a little bit more proud about it. Thankyou for this blog post it was lovely to read!

I am now following you on gfc, Just wondering if you would like to follow me too over on my blog?

  21. I'm a secret blogger! I think when you're just starting off like me it isn't really necessary to tell people, when the time is right then I will certainly tell my family/friends and I'm sure they'd be proud of it no matter what!
